Is Delhi/India Safe - Why so much new about India/Delhi being insecure for women...

Here is a answer I wrote on a forum- about whether Delhi is safe- and why so much bad-news recently about women insecurity in India:

Hi! We're Vietnameses studying in Russia (2 girls and 1 boy) and about to go to India in the middle of June. But after reading news about the unstable security situation, especially the rape in India, we're so confused to go or not. Can you guys give us some advice pls?

Security in India is roughly the same as it was since last 10-20 years-- perhaps getting better and safer now than before-- it has weaknesses- but it is not worse than it was say 10-20 years before.

I am not defending India/Delhi-- but basically trying to explain why there has been so much news lately about bad security situation etc-- which earlier would not come even in local media-- let alone global media.

One reason you read about protests etc-- is because today young people who are dissatisfied with government and system for many reasons-- are coming forward to raise their voice--
and because news channels and papers cover these protests and events-- because that is what gets viewers to TV and readers to newspapers.

Today India and specifically Delhi as a city has among maximum news and media outlets compared to any other city or country in the world-- and they all need something to print/show which will get public interest.

These protests are a bit like the protests in the Arab world-- some of which started as protests against insult of religion-- but actually were a show of discontent against the governments and the systems.

For example--
the famous American feminist writer and activist Eve Ensler-- who wrote the controversial feminist "Vagina Monologues"-- said the following about Delhi- comparing it to a case around same time in USA which was suppressed by authorities:

Friends,

I am a software engineer and I have no connection to hospitality Industry or to the tourism Industry.

But Delhi is my city- and I love Delhi.

I want everyone to love and enjoy Delhi- the way I do- and I want everyone to have a good time in Delhi and feel happy, maybe even make Delhi their home.

I feel sad when people say bad things about Delhi OR when people searching for information get incomplete or incorrect information about my dear Delhi city.

I have therefore started this blog- in hope that it will be helpful- Delhites and travellers alike.

And I hope that everyone, Delhite or non-Delhite, from every country  in the world will have a good time here and go home with happy memories of Delhi.
